Mr. Kalra says that he sees a story, a fiction in his paintings, and whose story changes day by day, and the painting moves with him, and he keeps on adding the details to it. The character’s emotions are important aspects of any kind of painting. Even if it is still life, it should contain a motion in the finest form. Choosing a painting that doesn’t add any motion or thoughts to the viewer is like looking upon a glass of water. It will be still a glass of water but not have any motion to influence anything in any way. It can definitely quench your thirst but it will never quench your thirst for creativity.
There is a need for motion and everything in this whole universe is in motion if you are in the still state then you will need the motion to be alive. A painting should contain motion and if it lacks then it means that it is absolutely still and not alive. Vikash’s works are more for the livingness than anything else. It is for the life, it should definitely contain a motion in it. This is why we see his paintings with character motions with added direction to the story of paintings.
Subtle Motion In the Pictures
If you go deeper into the art world and study the most professional artists then you will find out that they are amazingly good at adding motion to their works. Vikash Kalra understands it and always makes sure that his works contain motion in such a way that the paintings start speaking to the viewers. It should not be forceful but smooth.
In Vikash’s works, we find a lot of moving characters such as a barking dog with aggression in its eyes or a horny lion with lust. These things add a subtle motion to the picture. It is something very important for the artist as well as for the viewer.
Feelings through the contacts of eyes
Vikash’s works are always in motion, they are not in hurry to tell a story but they are also not completely still. They have a gut which adds very profound effects. In his still works, there are some falling and crushing leaves, some spoil water or anything. They all have a kind of motion in themselves. When we talk about motion in Vikash art, we do not only talk about the moving objects but the emotions they carry through the audience. It has a meaning which is not only conveying through the feelings but also through the contacts of eyes.
The eyes speak but do they speak clearly? It all depends upon the work of the artist if there is only the eye that is representing the whole painting then there should be some added motion in it.
Paintings with symbols and objects
What is the value of legs and hands then? If we are depending upon only one part of the painting to convey the conversation then there is a hard need for training and understanding. There should and must be moved in other parts too if there is not then what is the value of adding those parts in the paintings. Even in real life, your surrounding makes sense if it is not making sense then there is something wrong in it.
Painting is just a medium of the depiction of the real world in such a way that it clear the thoughts of the audience without causing any unnecessary effect on their thoughts.
Adding motion is an art, it is a part of art and Vikash Kalra knows it very well. He knows how to add motion to his paintings. Most artists know how to add emotions in their work but only a few know the process of adding motion where a character doesn’t only speaks through the eyes but also through the other things. It is not about only a single object but of a whole painting that contain many objects and symbols.
Vikash Kalra is a self-taught artist and writer based in New Delhi whose work has been exhibited across India and is held in several private and corporate collections.
